Playa del Carmen is located at the southeast of Mexico, in the Riviera Maya, the most important tourist area of Yucatan Peninsula. Its beaches are bathed by the Caribbean Ocean waters and tourism is its main economic activity. According to the last census, it has a register of 209, 634 inhabitants, from which at least 7% of the population living permanently in the city are foreigners. During Prehispanic times, Playa del Carmen was called Xaman Há (Water of the north) and it was the departure point of the Mayans for their pilgrimage to the Ixchel sanctuary in Cozumel. The first fishermen boats were made of wood with a sail. The most important fishing in that time was the amberjack and shark captures, the meat was extracted to salt it and keep it in good conditions until the trucks from Merida and Veracruz arrived and bought the product for its processing and exportation.

Playa del Carmen downtown was located for a long time in what is now the 6th street with marine federal zone and the 5th avenue, once a small settlement of palm-roof  huts.

During the 80's, a group of young mid-class people from Mérida,Yucatan arrive to Playa del Carmen and were called "Caribbeans". with fluency in english and business vision, they start to invest on properties and building rustic cabañas that used to host American and European backpackers, beginning this way the hotel industry in Playa del Carmen.

The travelers that used to pass through Playa del Carmen to get to Cozumel, started to like the land territory. The first tourist activities offered were Sport Fishing and Scuba Diving. together with the increasing tourist flow, some school professors from the primary school "Niños Heroes" started to build guesthouses, such as "Lili", "La Playense" and "Posada Marineli". The first hotel in Playa del Carmen was "Molcas", and since the construction, other national and foreign investors started to develop resort complexes and Playa del Carmen kept on growing with the development of the 5th Avenue, hotels, handcraft shops, restaurants, beach clubs, bars and more.

Playa del Carmen offers a vast variety or recreational activities to be enjoyed in the city and in the surrounding areas, such as theme parks, zip line circuits, ATV paths, amazing cristal clear beaches, colorful coral reefs to snorkel and magnificent spots for Sport Fishing.
